Night Prayer

Tahajjud — تہجد

صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ

The most beloved voluntary prayer after Farz — the prayer of the righteous

وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ عَسَىٰ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُودًا
"And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station."
— Surah Al-Isra 17:79

How Many Rakats?

2 Minimum
4 Common
8 Sunnah (Best)
12 Maximum

Pray in sets of 2 rakats with a Salaam after each pair.
The Prophet ﷺ most often prayed 8 rakats followed by 3 Witr.
Even 2 rakats with sincere heart earns immense reward.

When to Pray?

Start Time

After Isha prayer — once you have slept and woken up. Sleeping first, even briefly, is part of the Sunnah.

Best Time — Last Third of Night

Allah descends to the lowest heaven in the last third of the night and asks: "Who is supplicating to Me that I may answer?" (Bukhari & Muslim). Approx. 1.5–2 hrs before Fajr.

End Time

Must be completed before Fajr Adhan. Witr should be the last prayer of the night.

Best Voluntary Prayer

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer (Tahajjud)." — Sahih Muslim

Dua is Accepted

The time of Tahajjud is when Allah is closest to His servants. Any dua made sincerely in this time has a very high chance of being answered.

Purifies the Heart

Standing in the night in prayer purifies the soul, removes arrogance, and fills the heart with peace and Noor (divine light).

Sign of the Righteous

The Quran describes the believers: "They forsake their beds to supplicate their Lord in fear and hope" — Surah As-Sajdah 32:16

Protection from Sins

Regular Tahajjud builds such a deep connection with Allah that it naturally protects the person from falling into major sins.

Maqam-e-Mahmood

Allah promises those who pray Tahajjud a "Praised Station" (Maqam-e-Mahmood) — the highest station on the Day of Judgement. Surah Al-Isra 17:79
